Throwing Muses with special Guest Tanya Donelly
About this Event
7:00pm
Formed in the 1980's by Kristin Hersh and her half-sister Tanya Donnelly, Throwing Muses became the first American band to be signed to the 4AD label in 1986. They are known for performing music with shifting tempos, creative chord progressions, unorthodox song structures, and surreal lyrics. Tanya left to join The Breeders and then Belly, but she will be joining the band on this tour as the support and then accompanying them onstage to play some of the old material!
They toured and recorded extensively until 1997, when its members began concentrating more on other projects. The group was originally fronted by two lead singers, Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly, who both wrote the group's songs.
“Purgatory/Paradise” is their first release in 10 years and has been released as a book and album. It is certainly and uniquely Throwing Muses and yet like nothing they’ve done before. A lush collection of photography and writing, it weaves visuals, words, and new music together in to create a new perspective and a new way of creating art across media.
Founding member of three of the most successful bands of the post-punk era, Throwing Muses, Breeders, and Belly, singer/songwriter Tanya Donelly was born July 14, 1966, in Newport, RI. At the age of 16, she and stepsister Kristin Hersh formed Throwing Muses, which in 1985 became the first American band ever signed to the influential British label 4AD; not only did the Muses' dreamy, swirling guitar sound prove highly influential on many of the alternative acts to emerge in their wake, but they also made any number of unprecedented advances into the male-dominated world of underground rock. Donnelly's work with the Muses, and later the Breeders would culmninate in the release of Belly's 1993 full-length debut, Star -- a superb collection of luminous, fairy tale-like guitar pop songs. For the first time in her career, Donelly earned commercial success commensurate to her usual critical accolades; not only did the record go gold on the strength of the hit single "Feed the Tree," but the band even garnered a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
"Purgatory/Paradise," Throwing Muses' first release in a decade, is both a book and an album. It is uniquely Throwing Muses and yet like nothing they've done before. A lush collection of new songs, essays, artwork and lyrics, it weaves images and music together to create a full-on sensory impression of the Muses' distinctive world. Live, it is an amalgam of musical moments, interspersed with material from years past
