Black Tot Day
About this Event
It's nearly time to celebrate Black Tot Day again! "What's Black Tot Day?" I hear you say... well, this is our equivalent of Christmas! Let me explain why.....
For over 300 years sailors in the Royal Navy were given a daily allowance of rum (or brandy/arrack/wine/beer or whatever else was available, but mainly it was rum) and on July 31st, 1970, this all came to a halt as the navy tried to throw its stereotyped drunken sailor image overboard. On this day, the sailors received their last ever rum ration.
It was poured, as usual, at 6 bells in the forenoon watch (11am) after the pipe of 'Up Spirits!'. Some sailors wore black armbands, tots were 'buried at sea', and one navy training camp had a mock funeral procession complete with black coffin and accompanying drummers and piper. All very sad I know, but it gives us a fantastic excuse for a good ol' knees up!
There will be loads of cheap drinks and free shots of rum for those who wear something nautical or who bring their own Tot Vessel. Our ping-pong table will be converted into a giant game of shot battleships.
So, loads of rum, a room full of pirates and sailors and some old time sailor songs = Aloha Chrimbo
