We hope to see you all there, let's SMASH IT and help fund treatment for Alzheimer's/Dementia!
The boring bit, which is the only reason we're doing this; so bear with me. I am just one person. One bird. One Scouser. One mind. I am Han. Hello :)
I sit here, aware of my story and how it affects me. But this is how Before I Forget Alzheimer's was born; so is crucial to our proceedings.
I lost my Nan to a very long, aggressive and degrading battle to Alzheimer's/Dementia in March 2012. This ripped my heart to frigging pieces. To anyone witnessing this battle, or to those whom have lived the experience, I salute you - it's not easy.
Alzheimer's is fast becoming one of the leading strains on healthcare in the UK, and yet; we don't have funding in place to secure anti-progression medication - let alone a cure!
Since the loss of my Nan, I have raised nearly £3000 for Alzheimer's Society, but my work isn't done here yet.
Alzheimer’s Society depends on US to help it care, research and campaign for people affected by dementia. There are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK currently. Nearly ONE MILLION PEOPLE that we don't even think about. In a decade, we will all have likely been affected by this; and we will need to call on such support. Services provided by Alzheimer's Society, include support groups, day care, outreach services, education and advice sessions, and a national helpline. Alongside research and campaigning to improve the lives of people affected by dementia today, and ultimately find a cure.
£20 alone could pay an experienced Dementia Adviser to spend an hour with someone who has been recently diagnosed with dementia and their carer or family. My family and I would have cherished that kind of support.
So, I ask for your support not as a bird, a Scouser, or even as Han. I ask from one mind to the next. To protect what we have, we NEED to support this cause. For ourselves and our families.
Thank you for reading, your kindness and generosity are immeasurable to me.
Peace,
Han
xx
