THE BABIES // 21ST JUNE // @ THE DUCHESS
About this Event
Please Please You & Bad Paintings present The Babies + Fawn Spots
The Duchess, York. Fri. June 21st, 8pm. £7adv/£9otd.
The Babies formed by Vivian Girls guitarist Cassie Ramone and Woods bassist Kevin Morby in Brooklyn after a chance meeting between Cassie and Kevin in 2009. Drummer Justin Sullivan and second guitarist Brian Schleyer were added a debut record, 'The Babies', was released on legendary US indie Shrimper.
Several tours followed both in the US where the band have played with a host of exceptional bands including Guided By Voices, Times New Viking, Real Estate, Wavves, Surfer Blood, White Fence, The Strange Boys, Endless Boogie, The Strange Boys and The Vivian Girls for starters.
Indebted to classic 60s songwriting and garage rock by the likes of The Creation, this single shows The Babies at their most open and organic. Sounding like Nancy and Lee singing on Surfer Rosa, the melodies wouldn't be out of place on a Shangri-Las record. This is the edge of Wild Gift era X - pop without a hint of twee.
2012 saw The Babies sign to Woodist for their second LP, the brilliant 'Our House On The Hill'.
'Though imperfect, Hill's intensifying sonic clarity presents the Babies as a group that still believes in rock'n'roll as a powerful language, one that can help sort out mortal complexities and say something about the way we live.'
Pitchfork
'The two come off as a modern day Johnny and June-that is, of course, if Johnny and June were plaid-wearing hipsters raised on Sonic Youth and The Shangri-Las-and its hard not to crack a smile when they share the mic and air their lovesick blues.'
Paste Magazine
The diversity between Morby and Ramone's voices fit within one another like a wonderful indie jigsaw. Most recently, Ramone brings to mind the 60s girl group tinged vocals that Elizabeth Sankey of Summer Camp subtly provides. The Babies will gladly take you on a hand held tour through your own memory with added attitude.
The 405
For Record Shop Day in 2012, York indie label Bad Paintings released a 7" featuring two early recordings by The Babies which had never seen the light of day. In conjunction with local party starters Wrong Side Of The River, The Babies visited York a couple of months later performing to a sellout crown in the basement of Bar Lane Studios.
Keeping the York connection going, Bad Paintings and Please Please You have joined forces once more to bring The Babies back inside the walls to perform at The Duchess on Friday 21st June. Top local noise-poppers Fawn Spots join the party in support and the Bad Paintings boys will be Djing between acts.
