Gypsy Jazz or “Jazz Manouche” was born in France in the 1920′s. It’s a sub-genre of American jazz that is chiefly guitar based and almost always acoustic.
It can be traced to the legacy of one man, Django Reinhardt. Django was a gypsy who was living around Paris at the time. He grew up in a very musical family and loved to play the guitar banjo. When he heard jazz he was very intrigued!!! Just before he was signed by a British record label, he was terribly injured in caravan fire in which he lost the use of two of the fingers on his left hand! He was also told he would never play again! But he was not detered and although he never regained the full use of his hand he somehow developed a systematic approach to the guitar based mainly on the use of two fingers. Believe it or not, after about a year he was playing things that regular, four-fingered guitarists just couldn’t follow!!! His incredible life and music has inspired generation after generation ever since from gypsies to gadjos (non-gypsies) the world over!!!
Our project is in homeage to Django and the gypsy jazz style. Which we will be performing for you…!x
