*** Ben Abraham (Secretly Canadian/Aus) ***

In contrast to its ethereal title, Ben Abraham's 'Sirens' LP is deeply human. Its songs were written over the artist's developing years as a writer and the album has become a kind of musical documentary of the loss, longing and growth that carried Abraham from his very first lyric to this, his first long-player.

Abraham first found his voice writing songs whilst working in a hospital. Eight years on, he's made an album, toured with Emmylou Harris, co-written with Grammy-nominated singer Sarah Barreilles and made Sirens, his debut album. Originally self-released in Australia, Sirens is now receiving a worldwide release via the brilliant Secretly Canadian label.

*** Cry Monster Cry (Eire) ***

Irish brothers Jamie and Richard Martin of Cry Monster Cry's latest release, Rhythm of Dawn is an album of transition, both artistically and thematically. The cyclical theme of the record marks the journey from night to day. Birds feature as a running theme throughout, stitched like a seam into the fabric of the record. There is an apparent tension between beautiful melodic harmonies and heavier darker undertones present in the lyrics and sounds that make up the work.

Melodically rich acoustic gentlemen from the West. Bath's underground smokey-toned bard, Dexter Selboy and his Shonky pals in tow deliver stunning songs, soaked in bitter-truths. Fronted by one of the finest raconteuring frontmen around who's backed by perfectly honed harmonies from the shonkies.
