Bossaphonik at The Cellar feat USHTI BABA this Fri!
About this Event
So we’re back at The Cellar on Friday 8th April and for the first time in Oxford and at Bossaphonik, we'll be welcoming Ushti Baba to the stage!
A band hard to categorize, they have coined their sound “turbo-folkstep” - a big-band playing Celtic-folk as well as Balkan-folk delivered with exuberance and panache. Unusually, the band are driven by a live beatboxer punching out jungle, dubstep and hip hop rhythms. The band are at home having appeal at folk festivals as well as commercial festivals, this summer they are due to rock Shambala Festival, Boom Town Fair and others.
The 9 piece collective based in Bristol cover songs about travelling, sea shanties, songs about agricultural revolution, Romani Gypsy numbers, Sicillian excoricism tunes and traditional klezmer wedding tunes. Accordion, banjo, guitar, darbouka and beatbox create a heavy rhythm section whilst trumpet and violin soar overhead. Double bass and cello flesh out the lower end for a unique gypsy-jungle-turbo-folkstep experience!
Check out the band's bandcamp to hear tunes!
