About this Event

UPITUP RECORDS & MELLOMELLO present...

THE KALEIDOSCOPIC CABARET!

featuring...

“UOEIA”

...an ERGO PHIZMIZ presentation.

The histories of yodelling around the world.

Yodelling: the crack in the human voice when pushed to its limit, the plaintive wail of man against mountains. From the Pygmy tribes in the jungles of Africa, to the mountains of Switzerland, or the plains of the Wild West, to frantic Persian ululations and yelps, yodelling is a worldwide phenomenon that betrays its perceived image as a benchmark of kitsch.

In “UOEIA: Favola in Jodel”, Ergo Phizmiz presents the history of yodelling through music, masks, puppetry, collage, and animation. Based on the books “Yodel in Hi-Fi” and “Yodel-Ay-Eee-Ooo” by Bart Plantenga, and performed by Swiss Family Phizmiz, UOEIA invites you through time and culture, yodelling from cavemen to the modern age.

ALABASTER DE PLUME //

Alabaster uses his speech, song and behaviour to hold a room in moments of beautiful and bizarre clarity. He's been described as "harrowingly funny".

He is joined on occasion by accompanists, such as John Ellis, Paddy Steer, Ellis Davies, Hannah Miller, Will Calderbank and others. One person who saw a performance said "I had to keep laughing or I think my heart would've exploded".

Last year, he completed a two-year long production of the LP 'Copernicus' with these musicians.

This year he worked in collaboration with Bristol ska pianist Daniel Inzani to produce a multi-disciplinary production called The Jester.

Tonight's performance involves artists from both projects.

Alabaster lives in Manchester, works as an accompanist and with adults with learning difficulties, and spends all of his time in Paris.
