PalSoc Presents: Bristol to Bethlehem
About this Event
Friends of Palestine presents 'Bristol to Bethlehem', a charity fundraiser. All proceeds from the night will go to Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), a fantastic and unique organisation who deliver healthcare to Palestinians throughout the Middle East.
In 1948, amidst a series of massacres, 700,000 Palestinians were expelled or fled from their homes at the hands of militias during the creation of the state of Israel. This tragedy is known as the 'Nakba' (catastrophe), and has heralded decades of displacement, conflict and persecution. Israel has occupied the West Bank and Gaza, and annexed East Jerusalem since the July war of 1967, with this military occupation severely impacting every aspect of Palestinians' lives, while Palestinians in Gaza today have lived under a stifling blockade and constant military attacks for a decade. The Nakba is still lived by Palestinian refugee families today, many of whom are still denied their inalieanable right of return.
MAP provide access to essential health services and build local knowledge and skills to address local health problems. In times of humanitarian emergency, MAP are ready to respond rapidly with aid and assistance. MAP is also committed to bearing witness to the injustices caused by occupation, displacement and conflict. MAP speak out in the UK and internationally to ensure the political and social barriers to Palestinian health and dignity are addressed.
