DUTTY MOONSHINE BIG BAND

Dutty Moonshine is the creation of Michael Rack – a long-established DJ and musician with a penchant for the seedy world of vaudeville and even seedier basslines.



Described as the “Bastard child of Electro Swing”, Dutty Moonshine is anything but typical. Combining the classic sounds of the Swing Era with everything from Garage and Grime to Drum and Bass and Ghetto Funk, Dutty Moonshine creates a unique sound which is as relentless as it infectious.



This can be experienced nowhere more keenly than at live performances, which are characterised by their wild and raucous energy and expertly tied together by Michael’s charismatic hosting skills and mischievous personality.



2015 saw the birth of the Dutty Moonshine Big Band, a 13 strong live act comprising an 8-piece brass section, live drums and piano, as well as the vocal talents of Hypeman Sage and Maria Laveau. A long term dream that has finally come to fruition, the Big Band oozes the smokey atmosphere of a 1930’s Speakeasy, brought crashing into the 21st Century with an array of gritty synths and bass. In this short time, the Big Band have played an enviable list of festivals and shows, including landmark sets at Glastonbury, Boomtown and Shambala to name a few.



Although still making appearances as a solo artist, the Big Band is now the focus for Dutty Moonshine as it continues to grow and evolve. With an album on the way and a multitude of high profile shows in the pipeline, the future is indeed shining bright for the purveyors of this hi-octane, genre-defying and eminently enjoyable music.

ZAIA SOUNDSYSTEM

Zaia are a nine piece live reggae/dub/dance outfit based in Oxford, England.



At its core, Zaia’s music is inspired by roots reggae and dub both old and new, with influences ranging from Capleton, Gregory Issacs and King Tubby to Gentleman, Chronixx and Protoje. In the song writing process the band's members also draw on their diverse musical backgrounds, incorporating the sounds of folk, rock, soul, gospel and even drum ‘n’ bass into their own unique brand of bass-heavy dub reggae dance. Nightshift Magazine describes the resulting sound: “a real sun-kissed groove, awash with sparkling brass flourishes and cavernous basslines, but a deep melodic soulfulness at its heart.”

COUNT SKYLARKIN & FRIENDS

“A true unsung hero” David Rodigan, BBC Radio 2

From compiling TDK D90s in the early 90s to touring with The Wailers, remixing for Trojan Records and performing in front of thousands at festivals all around the world, Count Skylarkin has been making people dance for the past 20 years – specialising in new and vintage reggae, rocksteady, Jamaican ska, hot swing, jump blues, dancehall, hip hop and jungle vinyl, turntablism, pork-pie hats, dapper suits and guaranteed good times.



Over the years The Count has shared stages, decks and rum with such musical luminaries as The Wailers (2009/10/13 UK Tour DJ), The Specials, Toots & The Maytals, Chronixx, Protoje, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, The Skatalites, Prince Buster, Alton Ellis, Max Romeo, Susan Cadogan, Mad Professor, David Rodigan, Don Letts, Jerry Dammers, Trojan Soundsystem, Benga, Coki, Norman Jay, TEED, Benny Page, Ashley Beedle, DJ Yoda, Alex Paterson (The Orb), Massive Attack’s Daddy G and Horace Andy. In 2015 the Count was invited to appear on David Rodigan’s BBC Radio 2 show, where he shared tunes and tales from two decades in music.



Count Skylarkin counted the late, great DJ Derek among his greatest friends, and they gigged together in excess of 200 times. Since Derek’s sad passing in 2016, The Count has continued to bring Derek’s famous ‘Sweet Memory Sounds’ by special request to festival stages all over the land, among them Glastonbury, Boomtown, Larmer Tree, Wilderness, Shambala and Somerset House.



As co-founder of The Disco Shed he has made headlining appearances at Bestival, Latitude, Leeds, Reading and The Big Chill. Over the years The Count has also rocked The Secret Garden Party, Outlook Festival (Croatia), Common People, Standon Calling, Winterwell, Glass Butter Beach, Notting Hill Carnival and countless others. An authority on reggae music particularly, he has written for several music publications, including NME.



An East Oxford resident of some 17 years, Count Skylarkin is proud to have played at every Cowley Road Carnival since its inception in 2001, during which time it has expanded to become one of the biggest street festivals in the UK. His Cowley Road Rockers stand outside The Bullingdon is consistently the busiest soundsystem at Carnival.
